A late-night police pursuit spanning two counties ended in tragedy Monday after a 20-year-old Tuscaloosa man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy identified the man as Elyis Kani Taylor, 20, of Tuscaloosa.

According to investigators, the incident began around 11:40 p.m. when Tuscaloosa police officers initiated a traffic stop on Taylor’s vehicle for a violation. During the stop, officers reported detecting the odor of illegal drugs and asked Taylor to exit the vehicle. Instead, he fled the scene, prompting a high-speed pursuit.

Authorities said the chase moved through Tuscaloosa before continuing onto Interstate 20 into Greene County, then onto Highway 11 as it returned toward Tuscaloosa County. Speeds during the pursuit reportedly exceeded 100 mph, with deputies from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Alabama State Troopers joining the effort.

As the vehicle neared the Fosters Ball Park area, deputies deployed spike strips, successfully disabling the tires. Despite the damage, the vehicle continued for several miles before leaving the roadway and crashing into a wooded area.
