Authorities in Columbia County have identified the man who was killed in a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon along Route 42 near Catawissa.
The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Ajay J. Woodward of Numidia, Pennsylvania. His death has left family, friends, and the local community mourning a sudden and devastating loss.
According to Catawissa police, the crash occurred along Route 42, also known as Numidia Drive, when Woodward was traveling southbound on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Investigators say he appeared to lose control while navigating a bend in the roadway. Evidence at the scene, including skid marks found in the gravel along the roadside, suggests the motorcycle lost traction before being laid down prior to impact.
After losing control, the motorcycle struck a guardrail. Woodward suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 4:45 p.m., and authorities closed Route 42 between Kulp Road and Slabtown Road for several hours as investigators processed the scene and documented evidence. The closure allowed officials to carefully examine roadway conditions, vehicle positioning, and other factors that may have contributed to the crash.
Route 42 is a rural two-lane roadway that winds through Columbia County, connecting communities such as Catawissa and Numidia. The stretch of road where the crash occurred is known for its curves and elevation changes, conditions that can present challenges for motorists—particularly motorcyclists—navigating at speed or unfamiliar with the terrain.
At this stage, investigators with Catawissa police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional details have been released, and officials have not indicated whether other vehicles were involved.
As the investigation continues, those who knew Ajay Woodward are left to process the sudden loss of a life cut short far too soon. His passing serves as a painful reminder of how quickly routine travel can turn tragic, especially on rural roads where conditions can shift unexpectedly.
Authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as they work to fully understand what led to the crash.
