The community of Minooka is in mourning following the tragic death of 20-year-old Michael Roberson, a promising college baseball player whose life was cut short in a fatal overnight crash near Dwight, Illinois. His sudden passing has left family, friends, teammates, and coaches devastated.
According to the Livingston County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police, Roberson’s vehicle was discovered early Wednesday morning submerged in the Mazon River near Old Route 66 south of North 2400 East Road. Authorities say a passing motorist first spotted the vehicle and immediately called emergency services.
Investigators believe Roberson was traveling northbound on Old Route 66 when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane, left the roadway, and overturned into the river. The exact time of the crash remains unknown, though officials suspect it occurred during the early morning hours as he was reportedly returning to campus in Springfield.
Emergency responders from the Dwight Fire Department and nearby Odell units arrived at the scene, but the crash was confirmed to be fatal.
Roberson was a catcher for the Lincoln Land Community College Loggers and a graduate of Providence Catholic High School. The college baseball program confirmed his passing, describing him as a dedicated athlete, hardworking teammate, and valued member of the team.
In response to the tragedy, the program announced a moment of silence ahead of Friday’s home doubleheader against Spoon River College, as well as a candlelight vigil scheduled for Monday evening at Cass Gymnasium in Springfield, open to teammates, friends, and community members.
The news of Roberson’s death has sent shockwaves through both his hometown and college communities. Teammates, coaches, and friends are remembering him for his energy, commitment, and the potential he carried both on and off the field.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash, loved ones are left grieving a life full of promise that ended far too soon. Michael Roberson will be remembered not only as an athlete, but as a young man whose presence made a lasting impact on those around him.
