Reports circulating online claiming former Mark Richt has died appear to be false. As of Tuesday, there has been no official confirmation from family members, the University of Georgia, or credible news organizations indicating that Richt has passed away.
The longtime college football coach, who led the University of Georgia Bulldogs from 2001 to 2015, remains a widely respected figure in college football. Richt has publicly spoken in recent years about his health challenges, including his 2021 diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. He has also previously survived a heart attack in 2019, later saying he recovered and returned to work shortly afterward.
In recent months, Richt has continued appearing publicly at charity and football-related events. Earlier reports also noted he has remained active in fundraising efforts supporting Parkinson’s and Crohn’s disease research.
Confusion online may have stemmed from recent news surrounding the death of Richt’s father, Lou Richt, who died in 2025 at the age of 88. Mark Richt publicly shared an emotional tribute following his father’s passing.
Richt is regarded as one of the most successful coaches in Georgia football history, compiling 145 wins during his tenure with the Bulldogs and leading the program to two SEC championships. He later returned to coach his alma mater, the University of Miami, before retiring from coaching in 2018.
The rumors surrounding his alleged death have prompted concern among fans across the college football community, but no verified information currently supports those claims.
