A highway worker from Ellicott City was killed Saturday morning in Prince George’s County after being struck by a vehicle while on duty, according to authorities.
Robert Dempsey died on April 25, 2026, while working along the Capital Beltway’s inner loop near Maryland Route 414 and the St. Barnabas Road ramp. Officials said the incident occurred as Dempsey was conducting traffic control operations and placing cones outside his emergency vehicle.
Investigators say he was struck by a passing Mazda CX-5. Emergency crews responded quickly, but Dempsey was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dempsey, a resident of Ellicott City, was described by colleagues as a dedicated and experienced highway worker who routinely operated in high-risk roadside environments to help maintain traffic safety. At the time of the incident, he was performing standard duties aimed at protecting motorists and ensuring safe roadway conditions.
Authorities confirmed that another individual involved in the crash sustained injuries. Their condition has not been publicly detailed.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation and continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. No official cause has been released, and it remains unclear what factors contributed to the crash.
Portions of the Capital Beltway were closed for several hours following the incident as investigators processed the scene.
Dempsey’s death has drawn attention to the dangers faced by highway and roadside workers, whose roles often place them in close proximity to moving traffic. Safety officials continue to urge drivers to remain alert, reduce speed, and exercise caution in work zones.
No information regarding funeral arrangements has been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
